Bread Pudding

5 cups day old French or Italian bread cut into cubes
2-2 1/4 cups milk, cream, half and half or a combination
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 to 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup raisins

In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, sugar,
vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, mix well. Add the eggs and blend
well. Add the raisins or other fruit if using. Add the bread cubes
and mix well. Let stand, patting down the bread once in a while,
let stand about 25 minutes so the bread can absorb the liquid.
Butter a 9x12" baking dish and pour the mixture into the prepared
pan. Bake uncovered at 350: for about 1 hour. Sprinkle a mixture
of sugar and cinnamon over the top before baking, this is optional.
