Amish Friendship Bread Starter
1 tablespoon sugar 1/3 cup warm water 2 pkgs yeast 2 cups milk 2 cups all-purpose flour
Sprinkle sugar over warm water. Sprinkle yeast over water, and stir to dissolve. Let stand in a warm place for 10 minutes to proof the yeast.
It will foam and double in size. Combine milk and flour with the yeast mixture in a glass bowl. Use wooden spoon to stir. Place in gallon size ziplock bag and set aside for feeding schedule.
Day 1- Do nothing. (this is the day you receive the starter) Days 2- through 5- squeeze the bag to mix and force air out of bag. Day 6- Add 1 cup plain flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. (blending flour with sugar before adding liquid will keep it from lumping.) Days 7- through 9 - Same as 2-5 Day 10- Combine in a large bowl the batter, and add 1 cup of plain flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of milk.
Mix with wooden spoon. Pour 3, 1 cup starters in baggies and distribute or freeze.
When freezing, use separate bags for each 1 cup of starter. Squeeze all air out. When ready to use, thaw bag at room temperature. Begin the process with the DAY 1 SCHEDULE, or bake bread immediately.
