SEARCH RECIPES: LOCATION: Recipes >> Breads Yeast >> Amish Friendship Bread Starter    Amish Friendship Bread Starter 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon sugar 2 cups milk 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 pkg yeast 1/3 cup warm water Sprinkle sugar over warm water. Sprinkle yeast over water, and stir to dissolve. Let stand in a warm place for 10 minutes to proof the yeast. It will foam and double in size. Combine milk and flour with the yeast mixture in a glass bowl. Use wooden spoon to stir. Place in gallon size ziplock bag and set aside for feeding schedule. Day 1- Do nothing. (this is the day you receive the starter) Days 2- through 5- squeeze the bag to mix and force air out of bag. Day 6- Add 1 cup plain flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. (blending flour with sugar before adding liquid will keep it from lumping.) Days 7- through 9 - Same as 2-5 Day 10- Combine in a large bowl the batter, and add 1 cup of plain flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of milk. Mix with wooden spoon. Pour 3, 1 cup starters in baggies and distribute or freeze. When freezing, use separate bags for each 1 cup of starter. Squeeze all air out. When ready to use, thaw bag at room temperature. I have Finally found the starter so that I can make and give away the starter for my friends. This is the best tasting bread my family has ever had. We especially like to make it around the holidays. I usually give it away in handmade baskets to family. They are never disappointed. The starter works well out of the freezer so don't worry about freezing it. Go ahead and try this amazing bread. It is not that time consuming...my 9 year old usually takes care of letting the air out of the bag and adding the milk, flour, and sugar. She has a blast watching it. It's a great project to do with your kids, plus the reward at the end is just the icing on the cake!! THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORIES, MY MOTHER AND ALL THE LADIES IN HER CHURCH GROUP USED TO DO THIS EVERY YEAR. THEN ONE LADY MOVED AWAY AND THE RECEIPE WAS LOST.
