Baked French Toast

butter for greasing
6 slices firm bread (sourdough)
5 eggs
1 1/2 c low-fat milk
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
4 Tbsp sweet (unsalted) butter, at room temperature
1/3 c firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 c finely chopped walnuts
maple syrup

Generously grease a 12x7x2-inch baking dish. Lay the bread in the
dish, cutting it to fit. Beat eggs, then beat in milk, vanilla,
cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour over bread, making sure its submerged,
Cover and chill overnight. Combine 4 Tbsp butter, brown sugar,
and walnuts, and keep mixture at room temperature til ready to
bake.

Preheat oven to 350F. With knife, spread nut mixture over bread.
Bake 40 minutes or til puffed and golden. Let sit 10 minutes before
cutting in squares. Serve with maple syrup.
