Inspiration Cake

1 cup nuts, finely chopped
2 1/2 cup flour, sifted
1 1/2 cup sugar
4 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
4 or 5 unbeaten egg whites
1 (2 oz.) sweet or semi-sweet chocolate

Place nuts evenly over bottom of 2 well greased 9 inch pans, flour.
Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Add shortening, milk
and vanilla. Beat 1 1/2 minutes at low then 1 1/2 minutes at medium
speed. Add egg whites, beat 1 1/2 minutes. Spoon 1/4 batter into
each pan. Sprinkle with chocolate. Spoon remaining batter carefully.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool in pans 10 to 15
minutes; turn out. Cool thoroughly and frost layers.


FROSTING

1/2 cup sugar
2 squares. baking chocolate
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup butter
4 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cup powdered sugar

Combine chocolate, sugar and water in pan. Cook over low heat,
stirring constantly until mixture is smooth. Remove from heat,
add egg yolks, beat thoroughly and cool.

Cream butter and vanilla. Blend in sugar, creaming well. Add cooled
chocolate mixture.
