Print this Recipe    Never fail chocolate cake

6 oz/ 175g butter
5 oz/ 150g sugar
7 oz/ 200g flour
4 eggs
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 oz/ 25g cocoa
vanilla essence

- Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs, flour, baking powder, cocoa and vanilla essence.
- Cook in one tin at 350 F/ 150 C for 30 minutes. When a toothpick comes out cllean, the cake is done!!

Frosting and filling
If you wish to have a filling in the cake or to have frosting then here are a couple of suggestions. Firstly you can make the cake in two tins or you can make it in one and slice it in two halves horrizontally (not always so easy)

Filling suggestion:
- 1 small carton cream whipped with about a desertspoon sugar and maybe some vanilla essence. When thick, spread on bottom layer of cake and put the top on

Icing suggestion:
12 oz/ 350g icing sugar
2 tbsp cocoa (or you can melt chocolate)
4 oz/ 125g melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
small amount of boiling water

- Sieve the icing sugar and cocoa into a bowl
- Add the melted butter, vanilla and enough hot water gradually to make a smooth shiny spreading consistency
- Spread over the cake with a spatula and leave to set
