Applesauce Cake

1/2 cup shortenening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup thick, unsweetened applesauce
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp.salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp.baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp.cloves
1 cup raisins

2 cups brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tbs white corn syrup
2/3 cup whipping cream

Preheat oven to 350. Cream shortening and sugar together, add eggs
and beat well. Fold in applesauce and dry ingredients. Mix well.
Fold in raisins. Bake in a waxed paper-lined 8" square pan for 45
to 50 minutes. Remove from oven when done and let cool to room
temperature before frosting.

Cook frosting ingredients over low heat until sugar dissolves.
Cover saucepan 2 to 3 minutes to dissolve sugar crystals. Uncover
and cook to soft ball stage (238 F). Cool to lukewarm, then beat
to a spreading consistency and spread over cake.
