Butter a square pan 8 by 8 by 2 inches. Beat until thick the eggs and vanilla. Beat in sugar a little at a time. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and stir into egg mixture. Heat milk and butter. Stir into the first mixture and beat 1 minute or until smooth. Pour into the pan. Bake about 25 minutes. It was in my old "Fannie Farmers'" cookbook that I lost and haven't replaced. This cake sounds too easy to make to taste so good! It has a spongy, springy texture and a milky taste, but I have added a teaspoon of lemon or orange juice and if you are an experienced baker you can make some variations using bananas, sour cream, whatever. This is a wonderful cake good enough for guests that you can whip up in minutes!
