Chocolate Marble Cake

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
2 cups sifted cake flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt
2/3 cup milk
1-oz. square unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
2 Tbsp. hot water
1/8 tsp red food coloring
1/4 tsp. soda

Cream butter and sugar till light. Add vanilla and eggs, one at
a time, beating well after each additiion. Sift together, baking
powder, and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk,
beating after each addition. Combine remaining ingredients and
stir into 1/3 of the batter. Alternate batters by spoonsfuls in
greased and lightly floured loaf pan (or 2 8" round cake pans) and
zigzag spatula through batter. Bake at 350F for 55 to 60 minutes
(35 to 40 minutes for round pans).
