Old Fashioned Nutmeg Cake

1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs, beaten
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 tsp vanilla

Cream sugar, butter, and shortening. Add eggs; beat well. Sift
together dry ingredients. Add to shortening mixture alternately
with buttermilk or sour milk. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees.
Bake 2 (9 inch) layers for 25 minutes. Bake 1 (13x9 inch) pan for
30-40 minutes.


Frosting

6 Tbsp. melted butter
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup cream or canned milk
dash of salt
1 cup shredded coconut
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix all ingredients. Spread on hot cake and put under broiler for
a few minutes until golden color. Watch carefully.
