Toffee Apples

3 cups sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup cold water
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
drop of red food colouring
Boil together without stirring until a drop snaps in cold water.
Remove from heat and dip in apples on skewers, stand apples on
greaseproof paper until dry.
