Spicy Fruit Bread (Hutzelbrod) This makes one loaf.
2 cups boiling water 12 oz pkg pitted, dried, mixed fruit - diced 1/4 cup raisins 3 cups Bisquick 2/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/8 tsp. ground cloves 1 egg 2/3 cup milk 1/3 cup kirschwasser, kummel, or fruit juice 1/2 cup chopped nuts 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar or powdered sugar
In bowl, pour boiling water over dried fruits and raisins. Let stand while batter is being mixed.
Stir together well dry ingredients. Add egg, milk, and liquor or fruit juice. Beat vigorously about 1/2 minute or until well-blended.
Drain fruit and reserve liquid. Stir fruit and nuts into batter.
Pour batter into 9x4x3 greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees about 1 hour or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
After removing from oven, cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pan and brush with reserved liquid and sprinkle with granulated sugar while still hot. Or stir powdered sugar with 1-2 Tbsp fruit liquid and 1 tsp. of liquor. Use this to glaze the top of the loaf, letting it dribble down the sides.
Cool completely before slicing.
