DARK PFEFFERNUSSE 1/2 c shortening 3/4 c brown sugar, packed 1 egg 1/2 c molasses mixture of 3 drops anise oil and 1 Tbsp hot water 3 1/3 c flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp cloves Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, molasses, and anise mixture. Blend dry ingredients; mix into wet ingredients gradually with hands. Knead dough until right consistency for molding.
(If dough seems too soft, refrigerate until firm.)
Mold into 3/4" balls and place on greased baking sheet. Bake about 12 minutes, or until golden brown on bottoms. Roll in powdered sugar, if you want.
Cookies harden on standing. Also, I seem to recall that the cookbook recommended keeping them in an airtight container with a slice of apple to "mellow" them.

Great Cookies for kids to help make!, May 11, 2005 - 03:03 PM
Reviewer: Veronica Russell from Portland, OR USA
This was a wonderful recipe that I was able to let my 6 & 8 year old niece and nephew help with. They are also not as sweet as a lot of cookies out on the market. Everyone at my potluck loved these! They went fast..I also substituted Honey in place of the molasses and it was fabulous!
