Pfeffernuesse

2/3 cup softened butter
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
1/3 cup water
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon anise seed
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/8 teaspoon cardamom
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup powdered sugar

In large bowl, combine butter and brown sugar, beat till light and
fluffy. Stir in molasses and water. Lightly spoon flour into
measuring cup and level off. Add flour and all remaining ingredients
except for nuts and powdered sugar. Blend well. Stir in nuts. Cover
with plastic wrap, refrigerate 2 hours for easier handling.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Place
1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 9 to 12 minutes
or until bottoms are golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie
sheets. Roll in powdered sugar.
