Schweinfleisch mit Bier
1 fresh pork shoulder (skinned) 2 bottles of beer 2 onions, sliced 2 cans of sliced carrots, including juice 1 large turnip, peeled and chopped 2 cloves 1 tbsp. sugar 1 heel of bread 1 big can of sauerkraut pepper all over top 4 cups of water 2 big potatoes, cut up
Place meat and water in a big pan and bring to a boil. Cook until half the water has evaporated. Add beer and vegetables (except sauerkraut) and cloves and pepper (salt to taste), and cook until meat is tender. Add sauerkraut including juice and let stand for 15 minutes before serving.
NOTE: You can use fresh vegetables instead of canned. In Europe during this period Americans still ate canned foods from the States quite often. Local produce (and water) was VERBOTEN.
