Italian Meat Sauce

1/2 C. onion slices
2 T. olive oil
1 lb. ground beef
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 1-pound cans of whole tomatoes (4 C.)
2 8-oz. cans of tomato paste
1 C. water
1 3-oz. can (2/3 C) broiled sliced mushrooms
1/4 C. chopped parsley
1 1/2 tsp. oregano or sage
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. MSG (optional)
1/4 tsp. thyme
1 bay leaf

Cook onion in hot oil until golden; add meat and garlic; brown
lightly. Add remaining ingredients; simmer uncovered 2 to 2 1/2 hours
or until thick. Remove bay leaf before serving over spaghetti. Top
with Parmesan or Romano cheese.
