Italian Meat Sauce

1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-pound, 14-ounce can tomatoes, cut up
6-ounce can tomato paste
1/4 cup snipped parsley
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons ground oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
1 bay leaf

In large saucepan or Dutch oven, combine meat, onion and garlic;
brown lightly. Drain off excess fat. Add two cups water and
remaining ingredients. Simmer uncovered until sauce is thickened;
stir occasionally.

Remove bay leaf. Adjust seasonings to your taste. Serve over hot
cooked spaghetti. Pass the Parmesan cheese. Makes 6 servings.
