Doughnuts

1/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
1/3 cup shortening
2 eggs well-beaten
2 teaspoons salt
2 packages yeast, dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water
4 3/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix together sugar, milk, and shortening. Add eggs, salt , dissolved
yeast and vanilla. Mix well and beat in the flour. This will be
a fairly soft dough. Grease bowl and top of dough. Cover with
waxed paper and a lid or with a cloth. Chill until ready to use.
Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Fry as usual. Do not let rise
before frying.


Glaze

1 box powdered sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla

Dip hot doughnuts in glaze and place on rack to drain excess.

50-60 doughnuts
