Pasties
1 1/2 C shortening 4 c flour 1 tsp. salt 1 cup + 2 tbsp. iced water 1 pound round steak, cubed 1 pound pork steak, cubed 6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 3/4 c thinly sliced rutabaga salt and pepper to taste 5 tbsp. butter 1/4 C milk 1 tbsp. melted butter 1/2 C boiling water
Cut shortening into mixture of flour and salt in a bowl until crumbly. Add 1 cup ice water, gradually, mixing well after each addition. Add enough remaining water to make a pie crust consistency. Shape into a ball. Let rest for several minutes. Combine round steak, pork steak, vegetables and salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix well. Divide pastry into 5 portions. Roll each portion into a ten inch circle. Spoon 1/5 of the filling into the center of each one. Top each with a tsp. butter. Fold over to enclose filling, leaving 3/4 inch edge. Fold l edge over the other and seal. Cut 1 inch slit in each. Place on lightly floured baking sheet. Brush with milk. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to one hour. Spoon mixture of melted butter and boiling water into slit of each pastry. Bake 5 minutes longer. Cut pasties into half to serve.
