Hot Dill Pickles

1/2 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons dill seed (or some fresh dill, if available)
1 1/2 tablespoon pickling salt
1 1/2 tablespoon sugar
1 clove garlic
1 hot chili pepper with a slit in the side
1/2 teaspoon mixed pickling spices (optional)

Finish filling jars with cold water, put lids on and shake. Leave
in a dark, cool place for about a week. Shake every day.
