Kosher Split Pea Soup

5 cups water
1 Teaspoon kosher chicken bouillon
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup minced onion
1 stalk celery, minced
1 large carrot, peeled, chopped
1 Tablespoon barley
1 cup split peas (green or yellow or mixed)
1 teaspoon corn starch
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt

Combine the first 8 ingredients in a 4-6 quart kettle. Bring to
a boil, cover, lower heat to simmer and simmer for 1 hour.

Mix together the last 5 ingredients in a small bowl. Add slowly
to simmering soup while stirring. Simmer, covered another 15
minutes, stirring halfway through.

Makes 5-6 cups.
