Steak & Kidney Pie

1 beef kidney about 1 lb
salted cold water
2 lbs stew beef
2/3 cups seasoned flour
3 or 4 tbsps oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 can consomme & 1 cup water
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 or 3 bay leaves
1 tsp each - thyme & onion powder
1 tsp dried horseradish
1/2 lb mushrooms, sliced (or can mushroom pieces)
Frozen Puffed Pastry

Remove outer membrane, halve kidney lengthwise, remove fat and
veins and soak in salted water 1 to 2 hours. Drain and cut in
chunks. Cut stew in cubes. Dredge Kidney and Beef in seasoned
flour, brown in oil and transfer to deep heavy pot. Cook onion in
fat remaining until tender, shake on any remaining flour, add water
and consomme. Bring to boil and pour over meat. Add remaining
seasonings and mushrooms. Bring to boil, cover and reduce heat.
Simmer about 3 hours until meat is tender. Stir occasionally and
add water (or Port) if needed. Adjust seasoning and t turn into
casserole or baking dish. Roll thawed pastry to about 1/8" and
cover pie. Turn edge under and flute. Slit top Bake at 400 degrees
F until puffed and golden (35 to 45 minutes) About 10 to 12
